An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Somerset County Council Virtual School & Learning Support Team for an Advisory Teacher to join our team on a full time basis, with the possibility of offering part time.
Somerset Virtual School and Learning Support Team is a multi-professional team, with two key areas of focus. As a Virtual School, our role is to promote the educational attainment of Children Looked After by the local authority.
As such we work alongside schools, colleges, social care colleagues, and advisory teams to ensure our Children Looked After can achieve well. The Learning Support Team complements this offer by advising and supporting our schools and settings to be inclusive through fulfilling their statutory SEND duties and removing barriers for all learners.
Here’s what you can expect to be doing
Working as part of an experienced and supportive team the role will involve providing high quality support to Somerset schools and settings to develop their ability to strategically manage SEND to ensure they are fully inclusive, and provision impacts on outcomes.
This will include a range of activities such as through staff training and network meetings, strategic discussions and school/SENCO support, and pupil assessments, to ensure children and young people with SEND have positive outcomes and inclusive experiences at school. In addition, you will be expected to hold a caseload of Children Looked After, attending PEP meetings and liaising with a range of professionals to improve progress and achievement and secure high-quality education for this vulnerable cohort.
This is a full-time post, offered on teachers’ pay and conditions, either main pay scale or upper pay scale depending on experience. This post will be countywide and some out of county travel may be necessary. There may be the possibility of offering this post on a part time basis for the right candidate.

A few things about you
You will be passionate about inclusive practices and promoting the education achievement and wellbeing of children and young people with SEND and Children Looked After in Somerset. You will be proud of your profession, and able to reflect and think creatively about how you can make a difference to vulnerable children and young people and the schools and settings you are working to support.
A qualified teacher, with the National SENCo Award, you will have experience working as a SENCO and have significant experience of working with Children Looked After. Your education leadership experience as a SENCO and possibly as a Designated Teacher for Children Looked After, give you the skills, confidence and credibility to work effectively with other education leaders and professionals from a range of settings and agencies.
