Animal Care Assistant

Vets 4 Pets

We are recruiting for an Animal Care Assistant.

We are so excited to be able to offer the rare opportunity to learn the ropes, as part of our outstanding veterinary team in Weston-super-Mare, with a view towards training a hardworking and dedicated individual to become a fully-qualified Veterinary Nurse.  These vacancies are rare so if you’re ready to commit to a life-changing career move – read on!

The role of an Animal Care Assistant involves assisting our whole team – Vets, Nurses and Receptionists – on a daily basis.  You will learn how to greet our clients, make appointments and give advice.  You’ll be taught how to clean and maintain the practice and its equipment, and you’ll help to take care of our in-patients – amongst many other things.

It’s physically and emotionally tough, as you’ll experience first-hand about all the highs and lows of looking after other people’s pets in their time of need.  It’s often messy, sometimes smelly… but always rewarding.

You’ll need undivided passion and drive to keep you working towards your goal of becoming an Apprentice Student Veterinary Nurse (and later a Registered Veterinary Nurse!)  You will be in close proximity to medical and surgical situations from day one, so you must have the constitution to not only cope, but be excited by and thrive in that environment.

Person Specification

The position is full-time (40 hours/wk).  You will not be required to work out-of-hours or on-call duties but your rota will include one-in-three weekends in the surgery (Sat 9am-5pm, Sun 10:30am-4:30pm).

We anticipate that you will work as an Animal Care Assistant for a minimum of 1 year before being offered the opportunity to apply for a training position – but note that this will not be a condition of your employment.  Training an Apprentice Veterinary Nurse requires considerable resources, and acceptance on to the diploma at Abbeydale Vetlink in Monmouthshire; neither of which can be guaranteed on a precise date.

Suitable candidates MUST:
• be able to demonstrate a proven interest in pursuing a career in Vet Nursing
• have already undertaken work experience in this field
• have at least 5 GCSEs of grade C (4) or above, including minimum B-grades (6) in Maths, English and Science
• hold a driving licence and own transport
• be in a position to transition on to an apprentice wage for two years
Your application cannot be considered without these pre-requisites, and our choice of college is non-negotiable.

If you are prepared to undertake this commitment to your career, and you enjoy working with people at least as much as you enjoy working with animals (because pets don’t bring themselves to the vets!), then we would love to hear from you. Please email your CV and a covering letter to our
Practice Manager Kim Deane, at

Closing date for applications is Friday 22nd January 2021.

Applications will not close early – so take the time to make the best impression!
