Exchequer Finance Assistant

Fixed term contract until 31.03.2023.

Here at Somerset County Council we are looking for a motivated Finance Assistant.

You’ll be joining our dedicated Exchequer Group who provide financial advice and support to a range of service areas across the council, all with the aim of improving outcomes for people in Somerset.

There are over 100 of us in our wider Finance team, from apprentices working towards qualification, to qualified, highly experienced accountants. Together, we support the whole of the council, its service areas and key partnerships, to help deliver services more effectively.

Your continued professional development is important to us – full training is provided for this role and you will be well supported by your manager and team with regular one to ones. We can also support you to gain your AAT qualification.

We recognise the importance of a good balance between work and home life so we do everything we can to accommodate flexible working including some working from home,

Here’s what you can expect to be doing

As our Finance Assistant, you’ll provide financial support covering all aspects of transactional income and expenditure and advice to both services and finance colleagues.

  • Experience in providing financial support
  • A great way with people and the ability to work well in a team.
  • An excellent eye for detail and good IT skills.
  • To be able to work quickly and efficiently and be able to maintain high standards, even when working to conflicting deadlines.
  • To be adaptable to change and have the enthusiasm to learn new processes and systems

Additional information

From 1 April 2023 the County and District councils in Somerset will be replaced by a new single unitary authority – Somerset Council. It’s a genuinely exciting time to join us as we work together with the four district councils to deliver the new council for Somerset.
