We are looking for a talented Finance Business Partner to join Somerset County Council’s Finance Business Partnering team.

Together our finance team supports the whole of the council, its service areas and key partnerships, to help deliver services more effectively. We’re hugely proud that the high-quality, high-performing finance support and advice we provide helps to improve lives in Somerset.

It’s an exciting time to join us as we are currently leading up to joining with the 4 Somerset District Councils to become 1 unitary authority for Somerset in April 2023.

You will be based in Taunton with flexibility to work from home and other locations.  You’ll need to travel to different locations in Somerset and on some occasions further afield.

Here’s what you can expect to be doing

Depending on your skills and experience you will support either Adult Social Care, Children’s Services, Schools and Education Services or Economic Infrastructure & Community and Customers, Digital and Workforce.  You’ll provide high level financial advice and support to key stakeholders including Assistant Directors and Strategic Managers within the Council and external leadership teams.

There are significant financial challenges for these key stakeholders which have been heightened by the impact of the Covid-19 crisis, and you will have a critical role in ensuring they meet this challenge.  Your role will be to support a Directorate in their recovery from the pandemic alongside the transformation journey that the Council partners are on.

You will lead a team into a new Somerset Unitary Authority in April 2023. You will also have the opportunity to input into the shape of the new combined team during the Unitary journey.

A few things about you

To be suitable for the role you need to be a fully qualified accountant (or studying towards) with experience of adding value and driving through a business partnering approach.  You need to be able to demonstrate excellent leadership, communication and organisational skills.  The ability to advise and challenge senior management is essential, whilst exposure within a Local Government or Public Sector setting is highly desirable.

You will need to thrive in a fast-changing environment and draw on your problem-solving expertise, using your knowledge of legislation.

You may be asked to lead or be part of appropriate finance workstreams leading up to the creation of the new Somerset Unitary Authority.

Interviews will be taking place remotely via Teams w/c 13 December.  As part of the interview process candidates will be asked to undertake a 10-15 minute presentation, details will be provided at interview stage .

The salary for this role is £41,881 per annum.
