This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic public health team which has an excellent reputation. As Head of Operations, you will develop and influence the public health agenda and tackle the inequalities that exist across the county.

Somerset County Council covers a large geographical county with urban centres, market towns as well as vast rural areas.  The 2018 Somerset population was approximately 560,000 people and this is expected to grow by 6% by 2028, with the 65+ group expected to increase by 23%.  The county encompasses four district councils and shares its boundary with a single Clinical Commissioning Group.

Here’s what you can expect to be doing

This is an exciting senior leadership post that will lead the operational management of Public Health Nursing and Healthy Lifestyle Services. This post is an exciting opportunity to work within the council’s public health team and with hugely committed teams of staff to deliver services according to the highest clinical standards and best practice. You will be working in an organisation that is not afraid to innovate and try new ways of working to meet the challenges facing our children, young people and families.

You will be required to lead CQC registration as well as compliance as the nominated individual for Public Health Nursing. You will have a strategic role as Designated Lead for Children Safeguarding for the whole of the Public Health Service.

The post holder will work closely with commissioners from Public Health, Children’s Services and across the Somerset system, to ensure the Public Health Nursing service delivers effective and high quality universal and targeted interventions in line with the healthy child programme.

Additionally, you will oversee the delivery of healthy lifestyle services covering healthy eating, physical activity and support to stop smoking.

You will be responsible for the management of approximately 260 staff and oversee a budget of £8,900,000. You would be joining an experienced senior leadership team led by an established Director of Public Health.

A few things about you

You will be a Senior Clinical leader with a Nursing and Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) qualifications on the NMC. You will have significant leadership experience of health and preventative services across large geographies. It’s vital that you have knowledge and expertise in clinical governance processes, including safeguarding children, and inspiring high clinical and public health standards of practice.

You will have demonstrable experience of staff supervision and management alongside partnership working on complex issues, focused on improving outcomes for children and young people. You will have proven experience in working across a partnership and building relationships with a range of agencies such as education, health, housing, police and social care.

Positive, committed, adaptable and thorough, you’ll naturally promote the need for change and act as a role model for change.
