About Somerset Community Foundation

Somerset Community Foundation is an award-winning and Quality Accredited member of a growing national and international movement of Community Foundations. We were established almost twenty years ago to help people throughout Somerset1 make a difference on their doorstep, by funding amazing local charities and providing rewarding and impactful ways for donors to give to the causes and places they care about.

Somerset is a wonderful county to grow up, live and work in. However, a significant minority, often hidden from view, face considerable challenges in their lives. We believe that philanthropy will have an increasingly important role to play in reducing inequality and increasing access to opportunities for healthier and more fulfilling lives. We will build on our experience and expertise to help fulfil that potential.

Each year we award over £2million of funding into our county and we are building an endowment, currently at £8million, to provide long-term funding for the changing needs of future generations.

Our values:

We’re a values-driven team and organisation, and they underpin our culture, identity and everything we do.

Diversity, equity and inclusion:

Together we’re creating a culture where everyone, from any background, can do their best work and bring their whole self to work. We’re also working to ensure the voices of those we support inform everything we do.

Supporting our team:

Our work is important to us, but so is the rest of your life. We offer flexible working that means you can choose hours that work for you and choose a blend of working in the office, at home, or out and about. We offer enhanced maternity pay, and we’ll match your pension contributions up to 5% to help you save for your future.

We would especially welcome applications from minority ethnic people, people with disabilities, younger people, LGBTQ+ people and people with ‘lived experience’ relevant to our work.

About the Programme Manager role

As someone who understands local charities and similar ‘not-for-profit’ organisations you will be help ensure our Somerset Social Enterprise Fund (SSEF) continues to provide transformational funding. You will also help monitor the ongoing impact and performance of existing investments.

The SSEF programme provides social investments in the form of blended loans and grants to help local organisation based in Somerset grow and/or increase their sustainability and independence. It is particularly designed for small and start-up organisations that would struggle to access social investments from other sources.

Since its launch in 2015 over £1,000,000 of SSEF funding has been either awarded or agreed in principle to twenty-three organisations. The average investment is made up of a loan of £25k and a grant of £12k.

We currently have 17 ‘live’ investments that require ongoing support and monitoring. Our goal is to award up to ten new social investments in the next two years. In addition, we are planning to introduce a new grants programme to support start-up and early-stage social enterprises.

You will be supported by our specialist Social Investment Consultant who provides technical support to the most promising applicants as they develop their investment propositions and advises SCF on decisions. You will be line managed by the Programmes Director but also receive support from our CEO. You will also work closely with our Finance Manager.

As part of our team of Programme Managers you will help ensure our overall funding programmes are contributing to significant positive impacts in our communities.  We anticipate 25% of your time will be spent supporting other grant programmes as directed by your line manager, particularly assessing applications for small grants and supporting the monitoring processes.
