Somerset Wide Covid Support Officer (Events and Public Gatherings)

We are looking for someone experienced at working with, or in, the events industry, who can help advise event organisers on how to follow Covid secure legislation and guidance and to ensure public health is protected.

£26,337 to £33,548 per annum depending on experience and qualifications
9 Months Fixed Term Contract

Somerset is a diverse county with individually distinctive towns and villages, and one of the smallest cities in England.  There are areas of outstanding natural beauty, sites of historical significance, and many tourist attractions and before Covid-19 restrictions the county was host to many events throughout the year, including the globally renowned Glastonbury Festival.

As businesses, communities and the event industry look to the future and start resume the planning of public gatherings the Somerset District Councils areas (Mendip, Sedgemoor, Somerset West and Taunton, South Somerset) are looking for an officer to act as a point of contact for offering consistent advice on public safety and Covid-19 secure management plans.

The role will be pivotal in the commitment for the county to try to manage and prevent the spread of Covid-19 amongst the Somerset and wider communities whilst allowing, when possible, for events to take place again.

The post will be hosted by Mendip District Council and currently can work remotely however there will be the need to travel across Somerset to visit sites as necessary when restrictions allow.

The post holder will be responsible for:

  • Liaising with event organisers, local authorities, responsible authorities/emergency services for both licensed and unlicensed events across Somerset and in doing so attend Safety Advisory Groups (SAGs)
  • Offering a high standard of technical advice and guidance with regard to Covid secure public gatherings, responding to requests for service and enquiries to businesses, event organisers, members and communities
  • Reviewing Covid secure plans presented to districts and work with other agencies through the SAG process to advise event organisers and share learning.
  • Support the work of the Somerset County Council Public Health Team and the Director of Public Health in her duty to protect and promote the health and wellbeing of the local population.

A good working knowledge of the events industry and Government Covid secure guidance and legislation is required along with experience of writing and reviewing event management plans and risk assessments.

Excellent communications skills are essential in order to build and maintain good working relationships with staff across 4 district local authorities and with event organisers and partner agencies.  Applicants should also be fully IT literate, self- motivated and ability to organise competing demands from different organisations.
