We have an opportunity for a Speed Enforcement Officer to join our Speed Enforcement Unit at Avon and Somerset Police.

In this role you will be working mainly on your own travelling to your assigned area, enforcing the speed limit and detecting other offences, such as not wearing a seat belt and using a mobile phone whilst driving.

This being some of the Fatal 5 factors that cause death and serious injury on our roads, you will help save lives. You will be operating a camera to detect offences from within a van or by the roadside and risk assess speed enforcement sites to support Community Speed Watch.

In this role, your main responsibilities will be:

  • Operating detection and ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) equipment such as cameras to enforce the speed limit, and reduce other driving offences being committed
  • Monitoring and testing new camera technology and ensuring equipment is serviceable
  • Attending community events and shows to engage with the public and raise awareness of your role and its contribution to road safety
  • Identifying new areas for the use of detection equipment as requested by our communities

Skills, experience and qualifications required:

  • Must hold a full clean driving licence
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and prioritise your own workload
  • Skilled computer user with knowledge of computer databases including Microsoft Office programmes
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
  • Experience of producing statistics and providing evidence in court would be advantageous

To be eligible to apply for this role you must have a 3 year ‘checkable history’ in the UK – ideally this means that you would have been resident in the UK for the last 3 years.
