Strategic Support Volunteer (Developing Anti-Social Behaviour Services) – Remote Volunteering and occasional visits to police premises

Avon and Somerset Police has a desire for innovation, continual learning and development. We are seeking a member of the public who is willing to share their experience and knowledge gained at a senior level within the private, public or other sectors with senior leaders in policing.

Our policing leads for Somerset (Superintendent Turner) and Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) (Ch/Insp Cheeseman) would like to identify someone with experience of multi-agency working and business change who can assist with a service review and development of options which will transform the way that ASB services are delivered across Somerset. They hope to find someone who can bring a fresh perspective and who is confident in challenging current ways of thinking.

ASB can blight lives and we anticipate this volunteer will make a direct difference by shaping the future of ASB services across statutory agencies, ultimately improving the quality of life for communities across Somerset. The goal is to improve service delivery to make us more efficient so that our communities are safe and feel safe in their own homes and the streets feel safer.  The volunteer will gain an insight into policing and how policing business develops and will be integral to the research and delivery of strategic business change.

The background:

Somerset will become a Single Tier Authority from April 2023. This presents an opportunity to review the way that Anti-Social Behaviour is tackled by a range of partner agencies and organisations across Somerset to achieve a more consistent approach.  We are looking for a motivated individual with strategic experience of organisation or service change to help shape the future multi-agency response to Anti-Social Behaviour.

Anticipated tasks:

  • Knowledge of ASB is not essential and so the volunteer’s first goal will be to gain an understanding of the current picture in terms of ASB demand. This may include undertaking a ‘Ride Along’ with frontline officers and staff to understand the impact of ASB on first responders, individuals and communities.
  • Following this the volunteer will speak to individuals from a range of organisations and undertake surveys with key stakeholders to map the current ASB service provision across Somerset.
  • The volunteer will be asked to undertake desk based research to critically analyse ASB service provision in other parts of the UK to identify best practice and potential opportunities for local change.
  • The volunteer will subsequently assist in generating and costing a range of service delivery options. We hope that they will draw on their own experience of business change to challenge current thinking and practices and suggest innovative ideas or new ways of working.
  • Following the costing of a range of solutions the volunteer will present options for future service provision to senior leaders, to enable a robust and informed decision.

The ideal volunteer will have experience of successfully designing and implementing multi-agency working and business change at a senior level. Experience of policing or ASB is not essential. Experience of mergers or acquisitions would be beneficial. We are looking for someone who can bring a fresh perspective and is confident to challenge current ways of thinking.

You will have flexibility around how often you wish to volunteer to fit in with your other commitments.  However, we would hope that you would be able to commit to approximately 8 hours per week.

If you would like to know more about this volunteering role before you apply, please contact Please be advised Richard will be unavailable between 20th – 31st August.

Interviews will take place the week commending the 19th of September.
