Street Works Coordinator

Here’s what you can expect to be doing

If you have a strong interest in traffic management and supporting the expeditious movement of traffic around the highway network and enjoy every day bringing different challenges and engaging with people from all backgrounds we would love to hear from you.

Your be joining a friendly team that helps to keep Somerset moving and ultimately improving the day-to-day lives of our residents and everyone who works in or visits our county, your be surprised at the varied nature of the work. Your duties will include:

  • Helping to ensure compliance with the council’s statutory obligation under legislation to apply the Somerset Permit Scheme
  • Ensuring compliance with the New Roads & Street Works Act 1991 (NRSWA), along with the associated requirements of the Traffic Management Act 2004 (TMA) throughout Somerset
  • Undertaking the coordination of works on the highway and authorisation of Permits and licenses
  • Assisting with taking enforcement action through fixed penalty notices (FPN’s) and recommending cases for prosecution
  • Engaging with work promoters to help reduce the impact of works and to help them deliver their works,
  • Provide technical and street works advice to elected members, SCC officers, working groups/parties, other agencies and the community.

A few things about you

You will have:

  • Experience of working in a customer focused environment via the telephone and in writing, applying tact and diplomacy and adapting your style to suit any given situation
  • Proven Street Works experience in the coordination of works
  • Knowledge of permitting schemes and the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991
  • Experience of composing responses to customers and ideally report writing
  • The ability to plan, organise and prioritise workloads to meet deadlines
  • The ability to work independently and make sound choices based on published statutory guideline
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to deal effectively with complex complaints.
  • A good knowledge of Street Works systems, Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel and the ability to pick up a variety of bespoke systems.

The salary for the role is Grade 10, ranging from £30,451 to £34,728 per annum
