Tune in to wellbeing tips during quarantine

Two radio stations in Somerset are broadcasting shows to help with people’s wellbeing during the quarantine.

BBC Somerset has a show on Wednesday evenings between 7-8pm and has some great tips and expert advice on staying healthy, happy and safe during the coronavirus pandemic.

Members of Somerset County Council’s Public Health team will be on Charlie Taylor’s evening show, interviewing a different guest each week from services such as adult social care, and from the voluntary and community sector. The frequencies to tune in are 95.5FM, 1566AM, DAB, or listen at www.bbc.co.uk/bbcsomerset and on the BBC Sounds app.

The series launched on 22nd April with Denise Hodgson from Spark Somerset talking about Laughter Yoga and its wellbeing benefits. It is an exercise that brightens up the day and keeps people moving with gentle movement. You can listen again to the show at https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p088wdqb  (60 minutes into the show).

Councillor Clare Paul, Cabinet member for Public Health and Wellbeing at Somerset County Council, said: “The shows provide helpful and interesting ideas and thoughts to lift people’s days and help them feel connected.

“Physical distancing does not have to mean cutting yourself off from others – there is plenty that you can do to connect with people and these shows will help you to do that.  The aim is to offer interesting content, sometimes practical things to do while on air, and encourage people to call in with their own ideas of what they are doing in these difficult times.”

Show presenter Charlie Taylor said: “Our evening show has focused on health and wellbeing since its inception in 2018. Now more than ever it’s important for radio to bring people together and help them stay healthy, both physically and mentally. I’m delighted BBC Somerset has teamed up with the County Council to help listeners’ wellbeing and fitness.”

Future topics include a talk about bird song from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, nature with Somerset Wildlife Trust, mindfulness and meditation and ideas on things to do as a family.

The County Council’s Public Health team has updated the Healthy Somerset website to provide key information on dealing with the UK’s lockdown.

It includes information on how to access help and support across a range of public health topics, from breastfeeding and giving up smoking to support for victims of domestic abuse https://www.healthysomerset.co.uk/covid-19/ 

Somerset County Council’s website https://www.somerset.gov.uk/coronavirus/ also has useful tips and guidance – as well as further information about how Council services are currently affected. The page also offers the chance for people to sign up via email to receive a daily update on Somerset’s response to the Coronavirus outbreak – including further emotional health and wellbeing tips.

Taunton’s 107.8 Tone FM also have a 3 weekly meditation show running each Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday at 8pm. You can listen in the Taunton area on 107.8 FM or via the Tone FM website.

The show is hosted by Andy Spragg of the Sangha House in Taunton.
